About Benbecula accommodation

Benbecula accommodation is the practical centre of the Uists. Balivanich has the airport, hospital and most day-to-day services; the Co-op supermarket is at Creagorry. If you are flying in, staying here saves a dark drive on the first night.

The island is small and flat, with the airport beach and Culla Bay on the west and the causeways north via Grimsay to North Uist and south to South Uist. A Benbecula base works well if you want to tour the whole chain without committing to one end.

Self-catering and a couple of hotels cover most stays. Nightlife is limited; the draw is convenience, the airport, and being 20 minutes from both North and South Uist beaches.

Getting here
No ferry terminal of its own. Fly into Benbecula Airport at Balivanich, or drive from Lochmaddy or Lochboisdale over the causeways.

Benbecula accommodation — common questions

Is Benbecula a good place to stay for a Uist holiday?

Yes if you are flying, hiring a car, or want shops on the doorstep. For wilder beaches and a quieter feel, pair it with nights on North Uist, Grimsay, South Uist or Berneray — the causeways make that easy.

How far is Benbecula Airport from South Uist and North Uist?

Roughly 30 minutes to Lochmaddy, 40 minutes to Lochboisdale, and about 15 minutes to the North Uist / South Uist causeways. There is no public ferry from the airport.

Do I need a car for Uist accommodation?

A car makes the islands far easier. Buses run, but they are infrequent. Many self-catering cottages and B&Bs are off the main spine road. If you fly into Benbecula, hire a car at the airport or arrange a pickup with your host.

When should I book Uist accommodation?

Book early for July, August and Hebridean Celtic / local festival weekends. Shoulder months — May, June and September — are quieter, often cheaper, and still good for beaches and walking. Winter lets are available but check heating and ferry reliability.
