About North Uist accommodation

North Uist accommodation suits walkers, birdwatchers and anyone arriving on the Uig–Lochmaddy ferry. Most visitors stay in self-catering cottages; there are also B&Bs, a hotel at Langass and camping at Balranald and Clachan Sands.

The west coast has the big beaches — Traigh Iar, Hosta, and the RSPB reserve at Balranald. The east side is more sheltered lochs and hills, with Langass and Eaval for walking. Because the causeway runs south to Benbecula, a North Uist base still works if you have a flight into Balivanich.

Lochmaddy has the ferry terminal, a shop, the museum and the hotel. Further west, Sollas and Bayhead are quieter and closer to the machair. The North Ford causeway runs south via Grimsay to Benbecula.

Getting here
CalMac into Lochmaddy from Uig on Skye. Benbecula Airport is about 30 minutes south over the causeway.
Ferry and flight details →
Townships
Lochmaddy, Sollas, Clachan, Bayhead and the west-side townships around Balranald. Grimsay is the next island south on the causeway.

North Uist accommodation — common questions

How do I get to North Uist accommodation?

Sail CalMac from Uig (Skye) to Lochmaddy, or fly to Benbecula and drive north over the causeway (about 30 minutes). There is no airfield on North Uist itself.

Is North Uist good for a first visit?

Yes. You have the Skye ferry, RSPB Balranald, standing stones at Pobull Fhinn, and easy hops to Berneray and Benbecula. Shops are fewer than on Benbecula, so self-catering guests usually shop in Lochmaddy or Balivanich.

Do I need a car for Uist accommodation?

A car makes the islands far easier. Buses run, but they are infrequent. Many self-catering cottages and B&Bs are off the main spine road. If you fly into Benbecula, hire a car at the airport or arrange a pickup with your host.

When should I book Uist accommodation?

Book early for July, August and Hebridean Celtic / local festival weekends. Shoulder months — May, June and September — are quieter, often cheaper, and still good for beaches and walking. Winter lets are available but check heating and ferry reliability.
