About South Uist accommodation
South Uist accommodation is the biggest choice on the chain — self-catering cottages, a handful of hotels, B&Bs and campsites along the west coast. Stay near Lochboisdale if you are coming off the Mallaig ferry; stay further north (Iochdar, Howmore) if you want quieter machair and easier access to Benbecula.
The west side is one long run of beaches, from Kilphedar and Askernish up to Iochdar. The east side is hills and sea lochs, with Hecla and Beinn Mhor for serious walks. Eriskay is a short causeway hop south if you want the Barra ferry or the Politician inn.
Daliburgh and Lochboisdale have the main shops, the hospital and the hotel. Howmore is the classic thatched-township stop. Many holiday cottages sit on working crofts — expect sheep, single-track roads and dark skies.

How do I get to South Uist accommodation? ▾
The main ferry is Mallaig–Lochboisdale. You can also fly to Benbecula and drive south (about 40 minutes), or come via the Uig–Lochmaddy ferry and continue down the causeways. The Barra–Eriskay ferry puts you ten minutes from South Uist.
Where should I stay on South Uist? ▾
Lochboisdale and Daliburgh for shops and the ferry. Howmore, Askernish and Kilphedar for beaches and walking. Iochdar if you want to be halfway to Benbecula. Almost everything is a 20–30 minute drive from everything else.
Do I need a car for Uist accommodation? ▾
A car makes the islands far easier. Buses run, but they are infrequent. Many self-catering cottages and B&Bs are off the main spine road. If you fly into Benbecula, hire a car at the airport or arrange a pickup with your host.
When should I book Uist accommodation? ▾
Book early for July, August and Hebridean Celtic / local festival weekends. Shoulder months — May, June and September — are quieter, often cheaper, and still good for beaches and walking. Winter lets are available but check heating and ferry reliability.
