About Uist accommodation
Uist accommodation covers six inhabited islands linked by causeways: Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay. Most stays are self-catering cottages; there are also B&Bs, a few hotels and campsites on the machair.
Pick your base by how you arrive. Lochmaddy for the Skye ferry, Balivanich for the airport, Lochboisdale for the Mallaig ferry, Berneray for Harris, Eriskay for Barra. Once you have a car, the whole chain is a single day's exploring.
Summer books out. If the exact island is full, stay one causeway over — South Uist accommodation works for Eriskay, North Uist accommodation works for Berneray, and Benbecula sits in the middle.
- Getting here
- Uig–Lochmaddy for North Uist, Mallaig–Lochboisdale for South Uist, Loganair to Benbecula, and the Harris and Barra ferries at either end. Ferry and flight details →

Uist accommodation — common questions
Where is the best place to stay on Uist? ▾
It depends on how you arrive. Stay near Lochmaddy for the Uig (Skye) ferry, near Balivanich for the airport, or near Lochboisdale for the Mallaig ferry. Causeways link Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay, so you can stay on one island and explore the rest by car.
Do I need a car for Uist accommodation? ▾
A car makes the islands far easier. Buses run, but they are infrequent. Many self-catering cottages and B&Bs are off the main spine road. If you fly into Benbecula, hire a car at the airport or arrange a pickup with your host.
When should I book Uist accommodation? ▾
Book early for July, August and Hebridean Celtic / local festival weekends. Shoulder months — May, June and September — are quieter, often cheaper, and still good for beaches and walking. Winter lets are available but check heating and ferry reliability.
